Designing education buildings of the future ➜

We believe as architects that designing the education buildings of the future warrants particular attention and a key set of requirements and skills, writes Diarmuid Cronin of Cronin Architects.

While school building design in Ireland usually has a very specific set of parameters and accommodation requirements, we consider that they should also seek to promote a sense of inclusivity, a sense of belonging and purpose, and with a connection back to the community it which the building is situated. They also provide an opportunity for the building and physical setting itself to become the starting point for learning!

Future-proofing and allowing for future needs and expansion.

School buildings tend to be ever-evolving building types. With sustainability, a key factor today in any building design, part of this challenge should be in ensuring that school buildings are properly future-proofed and facilitate not only present needs but also possible future needs and expansion.

As well as skills, building design for education also has its own specific responsibilities: While schools are essentially environments where our children are educated, they are also the buildings & spaces which nurture optimism, promote community and belonging, and also encourage students and teachers to take pride and ownership in their environment. Our commitment to enhancing this sector can be seen through our number of successful projects and our satisfied client bodies.
